Chapter Fifteen
I drove home slowly from Connie's the following week with my heart still sitting somewhere around my big toe. Seeing Connie had cheered me somewhat and asking her to be a judge had helped, but the situation between Josh and I had gone from bad to worse. We'd had a ding-dong-no-holds-barred fight. A first for us.
My timing had been wrong, I could see that now, but Josh was either working or helping someone with an emergency and when I said someone, I mainly meant Pippy. And while he'd been out at Pippy's, I'd had night after night staring into space wondering about the words, 'You may have gotten away with this in the city...' So, by the time he had gotten in late one night, I was primed ready to say it all. To tell him that I thought Pippy was manipulating him, that his mother was going to kill me with a shovel and, of course, that Gary Hadley was actually coming to do a piece for A Current Affair.
But I'd kicked off with the bit about his mother, and it had gone downhill from there. Looking back, it probably wasn't the most important information, but there wasn't a lot of logical thought going on by that time.
It further hadn't helped that, nervous about him finding out the full details of the shoot from someone else, I had emailed him the details instead.
He'd thundered into the house. "A Current Affair?! Why did you not discuss this with me first, Molly?"
I was still sitting at my laptop having just hit send. I'd never seen Josh so angry. I was stunned into silence.
"Molly, you cannot think this is a good idea. This cannot happen."
"But you said yes! And now it's too late!"
"I didn't have the full details before, which strikes me as convenient because, if I had known that it was this sort of sensationalist media, I think you know I would never have said yes."
I'd dropped my head, knowing I didn't have a leg to stand on.
He'd stared at me for a long time before he spoke. "Why do you need this so much?" he'd muttered before storming out.
I'd sat open-mouthed for a while in shock. I couldn't answer his question. Why did I need this so much? I worried I didn't have an answer because it was like most things I did. I just jumped on a train and found it very difficult to get off again as it hurtled out of control. Was that the 'this' I had gotten away with in the city?
I'd pondered this as our week went on quietly, both of us unable to start a conversation and instead, hiding in polite television watching.
At least the preparations for the bake off had kept me busy. Once the word had gotten around about what we were doing, everybody had donated something or volunteered their time. I'd had a knock on the door late one night and found Reg walking away after leaving some boxes on the doorstep.
